I had mentioned on Instagram a few weeks back that I was going to put my money where my mouth is and finally start meal planning this year. Actually, no money involved but you know what I mean. I had been trying to start a meal planning routine for the last two years but I couldn’t jump in and get the hang of it. It seemed too time-consuming and I pretty much wanted to be all last summer lazy.
I took to Facebook and posted a request for a good meal planning app. A close friend of mine responded and told me about the Mealime app and swore it was the best thing since Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. I was eager to give anything a try at this point. I had tried so many apps but since I never could focus on meal planning I never used those apps.
I downloaded the app and wanted to share with you the Mealime meal planning set up and how it helped me meal “plan” but not necessarily help me meal “prep”. which I always thought went hand in hand.
HERE WE GO!
Here is the login/sign up screen. Once you start an account you can set up your preferences.
I absolutely love that I can set menu types for dietary needs, allergies, and foods my family and I just don’t like. I could also select serving sizes so the ingredients would be accurate for 2 or 4 servings.
After my preferences were set up I was then able to start selecting meals for the first week. I chose 9 pescatarian meals that looked amazing. I hoped that they tasted just as good as they looked.
The app creates a grocery list of all the items needed for each meal and then you are all set to go shopping for the week. Royal and I went to Trader Joes and ALDI to shop for our meals.
TIME TO GET COOKING!
Below are the meals I prepared so far.
Thai Coconut Shrimp with Basmati Rice
Penne Pasta with Tuna & Tomato Sauce
This dish was surprisingly tasty. I was nervous about tomato sauce and tuna but Sirr and Royal loved it.
Herbed Salmon with Roasted Green Beans & Cauliflower Mash
This was my favorite dish so far. It was the first time I cooked fish using coconut oil and it was absolutely amazing. The cauliflower was really good and I will probably always roast my green beans from now on.
Black Bean Quesadilla with Avacado Salsa
This was a hit! Cheesy, Beany and Awesome.
Shrimp Scampi with Spaghetti Squash
We have never had spaghetti squash so it was nice to try something different but we weren’t all the crazy about. I probably will use a red sauce over the spaghetti squash next time.
And one breakfast dish
Feta Spinach and Tomato Frittata
I thoroughly enjoyed the meals I prepared. I would say the main Pro of this app is planning each meal and having those ingredients readily available on when I am ready to cook.
Another pro is that the recipes were so different from what I would normally make. It felt good to get my family to try new foods.
Also, you are able to add grocery items to the list provided.
But a con for me was that the grocery items I added were not itemized by category with the provided grocery items list. Small issue but it still bothered me when I went shopping and had to scroll between two lists
I also had to cook every day which I hate doing. I thought meal prepping could be easily incorporated. But I don’t think the dishes I made would have made it a week in the frig.
I’ll give it another go next week because mama really does not want to cook every day and would prefer to meal prep and be one and done.
Welp! That’s all she wrote ladies and gentlemen. I hope you give the Mealime App try. Let me know your favorite recipes and if you are able to incorporate meal prepping.
Until next time, Peace!
